Thunderbowl Lanes
Congratulations to Hall of Famer Larry Walker for winning his 13th SSO title at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park. Walker defeated Travis Franz 215-189 in the title match. In the championship match, both bowlers got out of the gates slow, in fact, through 6 frames both bowlers only managed one strike with one open. The turning point was a ball change by Walker in the 7th frame. Larry threw a 4-bagger to put the game out of reach. Walker received $1,000 for his first-place finish while Franz, bowling in only his second SSO tournament, collected $500 for second. We had another great turnout of 112 bowlers at Thunderbowl Lanes.
Andy Rettig was our high qualifier with an impressive 1480. Right behind Rettig was Dennis Hansen (1470), Teri White (1442), and Glenn Pilon (1422). We had a great turnout in our women’s division – 9 women were in the field, 3 making the main cut, meaning 3 ladies out of the cut made the elimination round – 6 ladies in our elimination round is by far a record for the SSO! Thank you, ladies and great bowling!
The cut to make the top 28 was 1308 (Brian Esterle & Troy Stus). Our extras out of the cut to move on in the elimination rounds were Jeff Heimbecker (1303) in the senior division (50+); Mike Snow (1302), Joey Hickey (1296), Mario Marquez (1296), Mike Calvin (1295), Jerry Sikora (1282) and Bill Essman (1273) from the super senior division (60+); Anthony King (1296) and Charles Graddick (1291) via the super-super senior division (70+). Our three additional ladies were Toary Taylor (1300), Amy Stolz (1228) and Sandy Schultz (1159).
Thank you to Vicki and the rest of the staff at Thunderbowl Lanes for hosting the SSO. The SSO would also like to thank our staff and our sponsors; Brunswick Bowling Products, Red Robin, Beyond Boarders, Turbo 2 in 1 Grips, Hamtramck Singles Classic, A.M. Total Being Fitness and Dilaura Brothers Bowling Supply for their support of our tournaments.
Our next tournament will be February 22nd at Bonanza Lanes in Warren. This field is limited to 132 bowlers, so please sign up online or contact Lew Ansara or Ken Wyatt if you would like to bowl.
