Congratulations to Hall of Famer Mike Calvin on his 9th SSO title as he defeated Randy Warnken 277-256 at 5 Star Lanes in Sterling Heights. In the championship match, both players came out of the gate striking throwing 7 baggers, however, the 8th frame proved to be the downfall for Warnken as he got a horrible break leaving a pocket 7-10 split. Calvin struck in the 8th before leaving the 3-6 in the 9th frame. Warnken finished strong, however, Calvin only needed a mark in the 10th to win and was able double for the win. Calvin received the first-place check of $1,200, while Warnken, looking for his third title, collected $600 for second. We had an outstanding turnout of 125 bowlers at 5 Star. During qualifying, Hall of Famer Gerald Johnson led the way with an impressive 6 game block of 1509, followed closely by Mark Theil with 1505.

During qualifying there were a multitude of high scores – 300 games by Chris Toyias, Troy Stus, Edd Smith, and Terry Dockery; 299 games by Jamie Adams, Gerald Johnson, Mark Fagenson, and Keith McDonald; and 800 series by Troy Stus (818), Doug Moore (806), and Gerald Johnson (821).

The cut to make the top 31 was 1370 (Stacey Timmer). Our extras out of the cut to move on in the elimination rounds: In the Senior division (50+) Dale Hofmeister (1367) and Mike Modreski (1366); In the Super Senior division (60+) Jeff Kendall (1366), Carl Taylor (1362), Bruce Wright (1342), Todd Sim (1332), Jessie Bowersock (1317), Don Nyenhuis (1314) and Keith Engling (1309); In the super-super senior division (70+) Larry Wilson (1297), Jeff Suma (1269), and Dan Mayer (1246); In the women’s division was Michelle Berryman (1315).

Thank you to Rick Moceri and the rest of the great staff at 5 Star Lanes for hosting the SSO. Our condolences go out to the 5 Star family – Jim Grant, a 35-year employee and SSO Member, passed away unexpectedly Thursday night before the tournament. Prayers for all the family, friends and bowlers who knew Jim.
